Understanding Your BaZi Chart: The Basics

27 Jan 20265 min read

BaZi — literally "Eight Characters" — is also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny. It's built entirely from your date and time of birth, and it's one of the most detailed tools we use to understand a client's personality, strengths, and timing. Before your first reading, it helps to know what the terms actually mean.

The Four Pillars, Explained

Your chart is built from four pillars: Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each pillar is made up of a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch — together, eight characters, which is where the name BaZi comes from.

Broadly, the Year pillar relates to your family background and early life, the Month pillar to your career and social environment, the Day pillar to you personally and your closest relationships, and the Hour pillar to your later years and children.

The Five Elements in Your Chart

Every character in your chart carries one of five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, or Water. Reading how these elements balance, support, or clash with each other is what reveals your favourable and unfavourable elements.

This is the basis for practical recommendations afterwards: favourable colours, directions, and even timing for major decisions are all derived from which elements your chart needs more or less of.

What a Reading Can (and Can't) Tell You

A BaZi reading shows tendencies and timing, not a fixed script. It can highlight when a period is likely to favour career moves, when to be more cautious with health or finances, and what kind of environment tends to bring out your strengths.

It's a tool for making informed decisions, not a replacement for making them — the choices are still yours.

Preparing for Your First Reading

You'll need your exact date of birth, place of birth, and — importantly — your time of birth. Even a difference of an hour can shift which Earthly Branch governs your Hour pillar, so it's worth checking your birth certificate rather than relying on memory.

If you don't have your exact birth time on hand, let us know when you book — we can usually help narrow it down using other details about your early life. Our Bazi Life Analysis walks through all of this in full.
