Feng Shui Tips for HDB & Condo Living in Singapore

12 Mar 20266 min read

Singapore homes are compact, and most layout decisions are made by the developer long before you move in. That doesn't take Feng Shui off the table — it just means the adjustments have to be practical and specific to how HDB flats and condominiums are actually built, not generic advice lifted from a landed-house floor plan.

Read the Main Door First

The main door is where opportunity and wealth Qi enter your home, so it's the first thing we assess in any consultation. In many HDB layouts, the door opens directly onto a toilet, a kitchen, or a long straight corridor — each of these has a different effect on the energy entering the unit.

You don't need to move a door to correct this. A screen, a tall plant, or simply keeping the conflicting door closed can redirect and soften the flow enough to make a meaningful difference.

The Kitchen–Toilet Conflict

Because of how plumbing stacks are designed, many HDB and condo kitchens share a wall with a bathroom, or sit unusually close to one. In Feng Shui terms, this puts the fire element of the stove in direct conflict with the water element of the bathroom.

Keeping the bathroom door shut, running the exhaust fan consistently, and using a small water feature or metal accessory to buffer the kitchen can help balance the two elements without any renovation work.

Balconies and Windows: Where the Energy Escapes

Condos with floor-to-ceiling windows are beautiful, but they also mean energy can dissipate quickly if the outlook faces a busy road, a sharp building edge, or a long corridor of other blocks — what's traditionally called a 'poison arrow'.

Curtains, blinds, or plants positioned near the window help soften a difficult external view without blocking natural light, which matters just as much for a small unit.

What You Can't Change — and What to Do Instead

A unit's orientation, floor level, and block position are fixed once you've purchased or rented it. Rather than treating this as a dead end, we focus on what is adjustable: furniture placement, colour choices, lighting, and decluttering — all of which have a real, immediate effect on how a space feels and functions.

Every HDB flat and condo layout is different, and the fixes above are starting points, not a substitute for reading your actual floor plan. If you'd like a full assessment of your unit, our Residential Feng Shui consultation covers exactly this.
